DIYM (Previously paintr. DIY Home Improvement Marketplace (2022)
DIYM (Do It Yourself Marketplace) is a P2P DIY home improvement marketplace where users can buy and sell used and unused home improvement supplies and tools, and they can also rent tools to and from locals within their community.
This idea came to fruition after doing work on my home. I had cans of paint and other materials sitting in my garage. These are items of value and supplies and tools that I barely used. I knew dumping it would be bad for the environment, and I also knew that other marketplaces already existed, but it wasn’t geared toward the DIY community.
I went to various Home Depot and Lowe’s stores around the Bay Area and talked to shoppers in the parking lot to get their feedback about having a marketplace that was made for them. It was weird approaching people in parking lots but we eventually gathered enough insight to build the product.
I am very proud of where we have gotten so far with DIYM. Growing a p2p marketplace is one of the most challenging things you can do as a product creator. As of now, we’re keeping it local to our communities and may look to scale in the future if we decide to go that route. We have a great team who came together to build DIYM and so it’s been a fun project.
