Don’t repeat my mistake! As someone who has launched several products in the past, I want to share a valuable lesson with you that many creators tend to overlook.
Whether you’re building a physical product, software, or offering a service it’s crucial to identify your target audience and, more specifically, your ideal customer profile. When my wife and I launched Infyntree in 2015, I made the common mistake of assuming that every parent would be interested in our baby teethers, simply because babies are born every day. Similarly, a friend of mine who was launching a brand made the mistake of assuming that if people could see his vision, his brand was for everyone. However, this mentality can be counterproductive.
Without a clear understanding of your ideal customer profile, nobody will understand your vision. If your brand or product is for everyone, it’s for no one. Instead, it’s better to focus on a niche market and identify your ideal customer profile within that audience. By doing so, you can tailor your marketing mix, strategy, content, branding, product, and roadmaps to meet the specific needs and desires of your target audience.
Many creators make the mistake of building a product or service first and then they try to figure out who will buy it. This approach can waste a lot of time, money, and resources. To avoid this, start by identifying your target audience and then hone in on your ideal customer profile. By speaking directly to their needs and wants, you’ll create a brand that resonates with them and earns their loyalty. Eventually, you can expand to a broader audience, but it’s important to start small and grow organically.
